Week 8

Fractions Galore!

We learnt about fractions by making Fairy bread in class.

We cut the fairy bread in halves and quarters.

Scientist of the day-Monday of week 7

        Some of our science awards!

Another science discovery!

Did you know that sugar dissolves faster in hot water than in cold water?

Read to find out because we did this experiment!

Procedure (This is what we did):

  • We took equal amounts of hot and cold water in the two cups.
  • We added 2 teaspoons of brown sugar in each cup.
  • We stirred the mixture until we could see no more sugar in the water.
Results(What did we see and discover?)

The sugar was gone completely after 12 stirs only in the hot water but in the cold water it took 19 stirs. The colour of the sugar solution in both cups changed to light brown (similar to the colour of the brown sugar). We tasted the new liquid mixture in the cup and it was sweet just like the sugar.

Conclusion (What did we learn?)

  • Water is a liquid and so has gaps in between it's particles. The sugar grains went and filled these gaps and mixed completely when stirred.
When a substance disappears completely in water, we say it has dissolved and the mixture of the water and the sugar is called a solution.

An update on the latest....
Our Science investigation on 'The different ways in which toys can move'

As a follow-up activity from week 6's big book; 'Toys can move', we organised a science oriented toy day in our class on Friday 2/6/17. " This is so cool," said Lance.
" I love doing science because it is learning by playing," said Uzair.
Every child brought in a toy that could move in some way, from home. They sorted their toys into various groups and shared their reasoning as to why they put a particular toy in a group.

Then they made predictions on how each toy could move before actually trialling it out.

Our predictions were:
We think toys can move by:-
                1. pushing forwards/ backwards
                2. pulling
                3. spinning
                4. turning it around

But we found some other ways in which our toys could move. These are:
                1. twisting and winding
                2. rolling
                3.  swinging
                4. bouncing

It was  funny when Mrs Kumar brought a green toy truck and thought it would move if we pushed it forward but it didn't. She discovered that she had to push it backwards to make it go forward at a high speed. We all laughed and laughed...Room 3

Room 3's Favourite time, just after snack break each week...Buddy reading with Room 24!

Our Scientific experiments and our budding scientists in Room Tahi.

1. Baking soda and vinegar Fizz!

2.  Butter making.....Yum!!
Many of Room 3 children have tried this at home after doing it in our class.

" I did not know that making butter was so easy," said Fono.
